Peru has the highest navigable lake in the world, Lake Titicaca among its wonders. Around this development the Tiahuanaco culture and many legends awarded relevance at the dawn of Andean cultures.

The islands of the Uros people call themselves kotsuña, "the Lake people", and its origins go back to pre-incas periods. Some scholars argue that come from a direct migration from Polynesia, and they constitute a human group with an independent source that was occupying South America. Ethnic group distinct from the Aymara and quechuas, is called "Kot-suña", who formerly spoke the isolate.

It is thought that the first location where settled was on the banks of Lake Uro-Uro, in what is now Bolivia. Subsequently, fleeing from the siege of the Inca conquistadors, led by Pachacutec was refuge in the floating islands. The villagers over time were losing the ethnic purity, mixing with the quechuas and aymaras, inhabitants of the banks of Lake Titicaca. The last Uro′s woman died in 1970. That is why the current inhabitants of the floating islands still practice some of their ancestral traditions, but with significant influence aymara.

It is assumed that the people who inhabited the Uros was descended from the Pukinas, one of the oldest communities in America.The Uros are consider owners of the Lake and water; they say have black blood which could not drown or feel cold on winter nights. There is an archipelago of over 40 Islands, each inhabited by 50 people, being the Uros Chulluni the largest. Others such as Santa Marí, paradise, Toronipata are the most visited by tourists. In these there are schools, museums of medical post, etc.


Uros Islands Location

It is located north of the Bay of Puno, 6 kilometres from port Lacustre, at an altitude of 3,812 meters above the Sea (the highest Lake in the world). Uros Islands (3 810 m above sea level) are in the Bay of Puno and approximately 30, although that number varies according to the requirements dictated by the growth of families or by the decision of some families of separate, and form their own island or join another group of families, occupants of another island.
