Peruvian sites among top 8 lost cities in the world

Puno Peru


Chucuito

To 18 km. South of Puno (15 minutes by car).

Also known as the city of the real boxes because it was the center of tax collection during the colonial period, there are the main square and the Renaissance churches of Santo Domingo (16th century) and the Asuncion (17TH century).


Archaeological Complex of Cutimbo

Altitude km. 17 of the highway Puno-Moquegua, South of Puno (20 minutes by car) you reach the diversion that leads to the complex.

It's a Pre-Hispanic cemetery which belonged to the Lordships Lupaca and Colla. Despite the fact that are evidence of cave paintings of up to 8000 years old, major structures date from the years 1100 to 1450 a.d. There are also vestiges of inca times.

They dominate the landscape the chullpas or pucullos, funeral nature of large towers.


Archaeological Complex of Sillustani

At 34 km. North of Puno (35 minutes by car).

Chullpa Sillustani. Puno PeruThis complex is located on the shores of the lagoon Umayo. It is famous for its chullpas, which are circular towers of stone raised to accommodate funerary remains of the main authorities of the ancient inhabitants of the Collao. Some reach up to 12 metres high and are characterized because its base is less than the top. Within walking distance of the archaeological complex is the site museum where various pieces of the Colla, Tiahuanaco and Inca cultures are preserved.


Llachón

74 Km northeast of Puno, on the shores of Lake Titicaca (2 hours by car).

Llachon. Puno PeruThis community of about 1300 inhabitants kept their customs and indigenous cultural manifestations and its main activities are agriculture, livestock, fishing and crafts. Via Lake, boats to motor from the port of Puno and Taquile or Amantani Islands, or overland can get Llachón from Puno and Juliaca. The place offers a sort of existential, tourism because it coexists with the families of the place.


Chuchito province

Juli

At 79 km. South of Puno (1 hour and 20 minutes in car).
This town was founded by the Dominicans in 1534, but later they were expelled by the Missionary Congregation of the Jesuits, who settled in Juli during the Viceroyalty when priests turned the town into a strategic centre to prepare missionaries heading towards Paraguay and Bolivia. Known as the "little Rome of America" for its temples, they emphasize in Juli churches San Juan de Letran, San Pedro Mártir and Santa Cruz of Jerusalem, as well as the home of the Inquisition or Zavala. Of the churches you can see sculptures of stone, carved wood, paints and oils produced by prominent artists such as the Jesuit Bernardo Bitti.


Pomata

To 105 km. South of Puno (1 hour and 30 minutes by car).

Pomata is the Church of Santiago Apostle of mestizo style, and the spectacular panoramic views of the Lake and the peninsula of Copacabana.


Lampa Province

Lampa province was founded by the Aymara during Pre-Inca and throughout the territory are archaeological remains with cave paintings, like Bull Cave and the Cave Coyllata 4 and 10 Km. from the village of Lampa respectively.


Lampa

80 Km. North of Puno (1 hour and 30 minutes car).

Lampa is the capital of the province and is known as the "Pink City" by the color of the walls. In the area there are large forests of queñua, Puya raimondi and breeding of chinchillas, among other attractions.


Pucará

Pucara Church. Puno PeruAt 107 km. North of Puno (1 hour and 45 minutes in car).

Pucara is famous for its pottery, especially for his famous "Pucara bulls", and there is the Lytic museum of Pucara, which displays a set of sculptures lytic as monoliths, stelae and Zoomorphic sculptures, ceramics and other objects.


Kalasaya Archeological Complex

1 Km. of the Pucará town (5 minutes by car).

Ceremonial center of the Pucará culture around 200 B.C. culture reached its height between the years 250 B.C. and 380 A.C. Two areas can be distinguished: a ceremonial area composed by nine pyramids and other urban.


Moho Province

Moho

Considered the "garden of the Highlands" by its warm microclimate and its variety of roses, the town has several archaeological and attractive natural and cultural sites. Nearby is the Conima village, the Church of San Miguel Arcángel built in 1825, which emphasizes the image of the Archangel, patron saint of the town of Conima and monolith Huata, 5 km.


Cambría Community and Suasi Island (3810 masl.)

157 Km. northeast of Puno (3 hours and 30 minutes by car) it reaches the town of Cambria , located on the shores of Titicaca Lake , where you can share with the villagers farming , fishing operations and observe textile work, as well as explore the surroundings.

Suasi Island. Puno PeruThis community can be found in transport services in rowing boats to access the Suasi Island (20 minutes by boat approximately), which has a hostel built with materials of the area: stone, wood, straw and cattails. and it is fully stocked by solar energy. This island has 43 hectares, presents a wide variety of flora and wildlife. Here you can observe grasses, medicinal, aromatic herbs, natural grasses, shrubs and trees.

In the areas of protection of wild birds are choccas, cormorants, ducks, divers, hummingbirds, face faces, bandurrias, etc.

In addition, there is no shortage crops of potatoes, geese, quinoa, corn and tarwi modules and vizcachas and vicuñas.


San Antonio de Putina Province

At 137 km. North of Puno (2 hours and 30 minutes by car).

Waters reach an average temperature of 39 2° C (102 2° F) and contain a high percentage of sodium chloride, magnesium and zinc. Locals considered them ideal for treating rheumatic diseases and skin. In Cala and Picotani, other nearby locations, it is possible to observe South American camelids vicuña or alpaca and Bellavista sector there are forests of Puya Raimondi.


Yunguyo Province

128 Km. from Puno (2 hours and 30 minutes by car) it reaches the town of Yunguyo where continues drive to the port Punta Hermosa (30 minutes). From this port until the Anapia Island 18 Km. (2 hours and 30 minutes by motor boat).

Located on the Wiñaymarca Lake or Lower Lake of the whole Titicaca Lake, the archipelago of islands is populated by people who retain their native customs, being the fishing one of the main activities. They have organic pockets of native flora unique in the region, abundant wildlife and beaches of sand and small stone.

Yuspique Island, the largest of the archipelago, is used by the Anapia community to raise vicuñas.

You can see crop breeding of vicuñas and archaeological sites complemented with walks, typical lunches, strolls in boat and folk music. Customs include the Challa or "pay to the land"; the casarasiri, traditional marriage of the town celebrated for three days with the participation of the community and the Rutuchi or "cut hair" children infants with the presence of a godfather chosen by parents, who usually make gifts of economic value.

Ayaviri District

At 137 km. from Puno

(2 hours and 45 minutes in car).

Tinajani Canyon. Puno PeruIn Ayaviri you can visit the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, of Baroque mixed; the thermal waters of Pojpojquella (a 5 blocks from the main square) possessing curative; properties Tinajani (to 13 km. from Ayaviri), a curious geological sample consisting of gigantic and strange anthropomorphic formations, towers, animals and houses.
