Taquile or which (in quechua) is an island situated on the shores of Lake Titicaca in Peru at 45 km from the city of Puno. It has a population of approximately 1,700 inhabitants. The main village is 3,950 m and its highest point of the island reached 4,050 m above sea level. The inhabitants of this island are known as taquileños and are Quechua.

Which was part of the Inca Empire which is why until today some archaeological remains can be seen. This island was one of the latest Peruvian capitulated to the Spaniards in the 16th century. It was subsequently taken on behalf of the Emperor Charles V and finally went to the Court of Pedro Gonzales of Taquila, whose surname today follows his name. The Spanish banned the traditional Inca clothing, Islanders had to adopt the peasant dress up today used.

The island has a maximum length of 5.5 km and a top width of 1.5 km, being the second largest island of the Lake (according km) in the Peruvian part (after Amantani). Taquile Society

Taquileña society is based on the collective work and moral code Inca "Loves suwa, loves llulla, loves qilla" (not steal, no lies and won't be lazy). Currently its economy based on fishing, farming potatos in the platforms and tourism, annually receives 40,000 tourists. The taquileños are especially known for their its textiles that lie within the finest Peruvian handcraft. It should be noted that the spinning and weaving is done mostly by men.


Ethnic clothing

Garments using preserved much reminiscent of pre-Columbian times both in its quality, design and symbolism. The woman wears a red blouse and many multicolored skirts, coated with a wide black skirt. The waist is kept with a thin belt icing. The head and face are protected by a long black cloak that protects from the Sun.

The men wear a black woven trousers, his white shirt is covered by a short vest, whose form and colors determine his role within the community. It is also a long strip embroidered, whose tissue describes in symbolic form of the island, the events that have marked the life of the couple. Taquile Archaeology and history

Taquile history dates back to the pre-inca times. Indeed there are funeral towers from that time on top of the hill called "the island", entirely built in carved stone. These take the form of small rectangular rooms and entrance, contrary to the tombs of Sillustani, are extensive and allow entry of a person standing.

Taquile island also has a radio station running on generators, however the locals have decided not to use them and opt for solar panels. A curious fact is not living any dog on the island.
