Huaca del Sol and Huaca de la Luna

La Libertad Peru

The Sun and Moon Huacas are monuments of Peru, located approximately 5 km south of Trujillo, in the District of Moche. This archaeological site was physically the capital of the Moche culture from the 1st century BC until the 9th century.

The Huaca del Sol, rather, is a constructed building for administrative purposes, consisting of a step pyramid of 43 meters in height. Has five large terraces, the mayor of eighty feet in length, on a basis of 228 of long and 136 of wide and 18 m high platform, it is crowned with a 23 m high pyramid which has a quadrangular base of 103 feet square. According to legend, this monument was built in three days by a quarter of a million of men having used approximately 130 million adobe bricks. This Huaca was the administrative political center of this culture and housing for high Mochica society.

Huaca de la Luna

Huaca de la Luna - La Libertad Peru

The Huaca de la Luna is located half a kilometer of the Huaca del Sol, this building stands out as having temples which were overlapped and built at different periods. It has a square base of 87 meters of side and a height of 21 meters. In its upper platform is raised a series of rooms decorated with human figures.
In a ceremonial altar of the last built temple were discovered the remains of 40 sacrificed warriors. It is important to note that for this culture was a great honor being able to be sacrificed.
The Huaca de la Luna preserves interesting wall paintings of 5 colors (white, black, red, blue and yellow), which were derived from minerals, and reliefs where you can see the Moche deity named Ai apaec or cutthroat god. It is also possible to visit the courtyards and ceremonial squares of more than 1500 years old.

A series of characters as the deity of the mountains with belts that end up at the top of Condor, foxes with heads trophies, fishermen, a snake, huge crabs with ceremonial knives, characters grasping hands or the priests of the rituals can be seen on the facade. Each figure is related to the cult to water, agricultural fertility and the sacrifices made in this temple.
There is a playground of 10,000 square meters from where the population of the surrounding urban area could see the preparation for the sacrifice of the Warriors, however the actual sacrifice could only be observed by the high authorities.
