Sanctuary of the Lord of Luren

Temple of neo-classical style. The festivities in honour of The Lord of Luren consist in a crowded iqueña religious manifestation. In Ica and in Lima, October is month of devotion and fervor for residents who profess the Catholic religion. Every third Monday of October, from seven night, when the heat of the desert begins to placate, starts the crowd procession of Lord of the Sands: Luren, patron of the city of Ica. Thousands of faithful from all places accompany the image that runs for more than fifteen hours the streets of the city. The iqueños construct arches and carpets of flowers and sing happy at its pace. There is excitement but, above all, humility and faith. For the historian Arturo Jiménez Borja, this is a collection, respectful, procession illuminated by infinite candles that carry the hands of his devout followers.

Other dates that Catholic fervor and the unconditional to the Lord of Luren leave is for Easter, where again the warm Ica streets are full of that sea of devotees accompanying tireless to the Lord of Luren. The Lord of Luren, crucified on a large wood cross raises the Majesty of his dark presence on the human sea that surrounds it. Face, body, hands and feet aggregates are iqueños ( Icas people) . From the high throne of his walks, simple but beautiful, looks to his people and responds to look long and deep. This is the Lord of the desert.

The Lord of Luren history dates back to the Spanish conquest of this part of Peru. They say that its name derives from the quechua voice Hurin, meaning "low" in allusion to the bottom of the Valley of Ica, place where started the cult of the image. Tradition that Nicolas de Rivera "El Viejo", named after forty years at the beginning of the conquest of Peru, he was commissioned to Francisco Pizarro founded the capital of the new colony somewhere towards the South of Lima, that the Lurín River Valley was very narrow and populated. Rivera found a suitable place where stands the town of Pisco, seven leagues from the sea, in the site known as San Gallán. It was precisely here that Rivera received the news of Pizarro's death at the hands of the almagristas in 1541.

On May 13, Nicholas Rivera, settled in the Valley, which had already provided several sales and a hermitage , decides to found the hospital San Nicolás of Luren for needy Indians. Soon after, in 1558, to do his will, gives the place of sufficient income and notes his organization. They say that there was a sort of debt moral, forced by his conscience, and voice father Bartolomé de las Casas, restore gone wrong and repair damage to the Indians of the region in this act. The case is that it existed in the Hermitage built by Rivera in Ica, a Christ crucified, small and deteriorated. This motivated the need for a more dignified image by which, after some negotiations, the iqueños got the great convent of San Francisco of Lima sent carving to Spain an image of Christ on the cross.

It has one of the most popular versions of this story, the ship carrying the image was a terrible storm prey should be throwing sea much of the burden to lighten the vessel and avoid the wreck. Among the many things that were to stop water, was the great drawer wood containing the Christ to Lima.

Drawer was at sea for a long time until he was stranded by the waves on a beach close to the port of Callao. The Franciscan convent of Lima authorities were not interested in the drawer as they imagined the deterioration moisture had caused in their content. Forced by the port of Callao captaincy, monks moved the drawer to the convent, where he was forgotten.

While in Lima, a priest from Ica, alerted the event for Lima public comment agreed with the Franciscans buying drawer. This was led to Pisco and Ica, where immediately captivated the entire city; their conservation status was intact and from this fact became the Center regarding which, growing and extending region growing, established in utmost devotion.

The temple that housed the Christ for the first time was simple, adobe and wood. Four centuries later, in 1918, a severe fire destroyed it, severely damaging the image. Fire respected Christ trunk, not head and the limbs, which were burned. Spare parts of pain caused by the loss, the Ica people commissioned their best artists image restoration.

Francisco Caso carved the head, master cabinetmaker Alberto Sierra Alta, made the limbs and the painter Jesús Silva gave the carnation and the finishes. This is the Christ can be seen today and that the town of Ica comes with deep devotion. Unfortunately the evening of August 15, 2007, a devastating earthwake measuring 7.9 degrees on the Richter scale destroyed in 30% the city of Ica and the sanctuary of the Lord of Luren was partially damaged on the Bell Tower, but no casualties were recorded inside. The image is currently in an atmosphere of the monastery of the Discalced Carmelite Fathers located between streets Piura and Cutervo in the city of Ica.

Currently (2008) was in the process of demolition. However, there is controversy in the town, because other specialists think should not demolish the temple, but only rebuilt, not official opinion is expected INC permission to start the works of demolition and building the new temple of Luren.
