Three Peruvian archaeological sites -Machu Picchu (Cusco), Chan Chan (La Libertad) and Caral (Lima)- have been named among the top eight lost cities in the world, Peru's export and tourism promotion board Promperu has announced.more »
The Nazca lines, as they are more known are in the Pampas Jumana in the desert of Nazca, between the towns of Nazca and Palpa on Peru.
They were drawn by culture is born. They are composed of several hundred figures ranging as simple as lines designs to complex zoomorphic figures, fitomorfas and geometric appear drawn in the Earth's surface.
Since 1994 the UNESCO Committee has inscribed the lines and geoglyphs of Nazca and Pampas Jumana as humanity heritage.
The first reference to these figures belong to conqueror Pedro Cieza de Leon in 1547. Toribio Mejia Xesspe rediscovers the lines for the scientific world at the beginning of the 20th century. Mejía Xesspe surmised that it was "Cure" or sacred paths. Continuing his research Paul Kosok, who considers them centres of cult and ceremony.
The María Reiche mathematics influenced Paul Kosok venturing the hypothesis that these drawings were astronomical significance.
The first serious field on these drawings study is due after five seasons of fieldwork, team Reindel and island. These archaeologists have documented and excavated more than 650 sites and have managed to trace the history of the culture that created these drawings give them a sense.
Water supply played an important role in the region. Excavations have brought to light small cavities in the geoglifos which found religious offerings of agricultural products and above all marine animals. The drawings were a ritual landscape whose purpose was to be lead to the invocation of the water. Also found stakes, Twine and trials of figures. These simple elements used the ancient inhabitants of Nazca to chart drawings. In addition there is one of the driest areas of the world which favours the conservation of the drawings.
Seen closely, these lines are converted into simple furrows in the ground. The geological characteristics of the pampa are conducive not be necessary much more to get a visible result. The surface is composed of a layer of pebbles in a dark reddish caused by oxidation, which covers other pale yellow. Nazcas them were limited to remove the upper stones following a route previously identified with stakes, linked by ropes on a smaller scale and a dose of geometry model. Removed rocks were accumulated in small mounds that still remain. The working method has been completely rebuilt from the evidence collected by the archaeological expeditions.
Many are the figures found in Nazca, particularly in the pampas of San Jose: geometric figures, meanders, animal, plant and human representations, mazes, and other geometric patterns. The most representative are the drawings of animals: birds from among 259 and 275 meters long (giant hummingbirds, condors, Egret, crane, Pelican, the Seagull, Parrot and others), a monkey, a spider, a snail, a lizard, a killer whale of 27 metres, a dog with legs and tail long two flames, etc. In the category of reptiles, a lizard that was cut to build Road South, an iguana and a snake. Many of the drawings are mixed with lines and spirals.
Almost all drawings were made in the surface flat; There are only a few on the slopes of the hills. Almost all figures placed on hillsides are men. Some are crowned by three or four vertical lines representing perhaps played ceremonial feathers (some Peruvian mummy wore headdresses of gold and feathers).
Hillside figures appear less defined than the desert maybe because the stones which have been filmed by the slope have erased the details.
More than 30 are the geoglifos to date found on the Pampas of Nazca. The drawings are less in number compared to the geometric designs consisting of hundreds and hundreds of lines, triangles and squares that occupy large tracts of land. His technique of construction was careful that surveyors of the past carried lines hills and ravines without deviating from its original address.
Lines depth never exceeds 30 cm and some are simple scratches on the surface, but they can still be recognized when the Sun is low and the relief is accentuated.
