Cajamarca Peru

Cajamarca Province

Cajamarca Cathedral or Santa Catalina Mother Church

Cathedral.Cajamarca PeruThe Royal Decree of 26 December 1665 ordered the establishment of a parish of Spaniards in the city of Cajamarca and the temple which, in 1682, would be elevated to the status of Cathedral was built in the former House of Justice. It's one of the most outstanding samples of Peruvian Baroque and has a facade that harmoniously combines columns, cornices and finely carved niches. In his three ships include the main altar and the pulpit, both carved in wood and covered with gold leaf.

San Francisco Church (originally called "San Antonio")

Church San Francisco.Cajamarca PeruIt was built in 1699 with the carved stones of the so-called "House of the "Sierpe", property of the cacique of Cajamarca, Don Calixto Astopilco, and stones of the Hill Santa Apolonia. In 1952, were discovered under the high altar of the Church catacombs in which lay the remains of numerous members of the Franciscan order and members of the indigenous nobility. In addition to the church you can visit the convent, the Museum of Religious art and the Sanctuary of the Dolorosa Virgin, patron saint of the city. The image of the Virgin is found in the Chapel of the Tabernacle (1685), adjacent to the Church of San Francisco, which includes the carved Baroque, carved in stone in high relief depicting scenes from the life of Jesus and the choir stalls carved in wood.

Bethlehem Monumental Set

Architectural ensemble of the 18th century, which includes the Church, the former Male Hospital (medical Museum) and the former Hospital of women (Museum) (Archaeological and ethnographic), formerly called "Nuestra Señora de la Piedad Hospital". The temple, of baroque style, is characterized by its cover carefully carved in stone, the unfinished towers, the arches and the lateral buttresses.

The Recoleta Monumental Set

This set consists of the Church and the convent, both constructions of the second half of the 17TH century. The faade of the temple-shaped neoclassical plateresque altarpiece, with elegant cattails instead of towers. Its interior, consisting of a single ship, shines a beautiful cupola, the high choir and three sober altars.

Santa Apolonia Natural Viewpoint

Church Santa Apolonia.Cajamarca PeruLocated in the upper part of town, the main entrance is by the Jr. 2 de Mayo, two blocks from the Plaza de Armas.(main square)

The Santa Apolonia Hill, formerly called in quechua Rumi Tiana (stone seat), is a strategic point to appreciate the city and the Valley of Cajamarca. In the edges are some vestiges of pre-Hispanic constructions such as the so-called "Chair of the Inca", formed by a block of stone that comes from the own Hill and that was carefully carved to give it its present form. It emphasizes, between the perrons and gardens, a chapel consecrated to our Lady of Fatima.

Rescue Room

It is the only vestige of Inca architecture in the city. It was built in stone, with the walls slightly inclined to give the trapezoidal form characteristic of the Inca's constructions. The Atahualpa Inca, who was imprisoned in this room, offered Francisco Pizarro to fill the room with double silver and with gold in exchange for his freedom.

Cumbemayo Archaeological Complex

Stone Forest Cumbemayo.Cajamarca PeruDiscovered in 1937, the complex is surrounded by an interesting stone forest that seems to reproduce the silhouettes of pious friars (on what family is called "frailones"). In addition, include the Aqueduct (1000 BC), unique work of hydraulic engineering; the so-called sanctuary, farallón with appearance of a gigantic human head; and the caves, where there are engravings or petroglyphs.

Layzón Archaeological Complex

To 9 km. southwest of the city of Cajamarca (20 minutes by car).

Consists it of walls that exceed 6 meters of height and monoliths in high relief worked in rock. The main structure was built with a continuous superposition of semi edged stones and there are six platforms united by perrons; on the slopes there are several aligned enclosures, and towards the Southeast appears a great platform. The place would have been dedicated to the gods.
