Yanahuara Viewpoint

Mirador Yanahuara. Arequipa Peru

Yanahuara is located 2 km. from the Centre of the city of Arequipa. This neighborhood has one of the most prominent churches of the mixed race regional art, built in 1750. Yanahuara is a colorful district of narrow streets, large houses of extensive orchards and tasty picanterías (typical food restaurants).

The plaza has a viewpoint which was built in the 19th century and is made up of a series of arches of ashlar where the words of illustrious Arequipa people have been recorded. The place has a privileged view of the city and Volcano Misti.

Cayma District

Cayma is located 3 km. to the South of the city of Arequipa. The town of Cayma is known as the "balcony of Arequipa" due to its privileged location that allows to see the entire city and its surroundings. Its central square is home to the colonial Temple of St. Michael the Archangel, built in 1730 and considered an architectural jewel by its mixed race faade and baroque architecture. Next to the Temple stands the Casa Cural (rectory) that retains the "Bolivar Dining Room" where, according to, had lunch the Liberator during his stay in the village.

Town of Sabandía

Sabandía is located 8 km. South of the city of Arequipa.
Spacious terraces and three volcanoes, Misti, Chachani and Pichu Pichu, give framework to the landscape that surrounds this traditional town.

Sabandía Mill

It was built in 1785, represents the typical architecture of the region and is a magnificent building of ashlar. Their solid buttresses and simple balconies are characteristic. Also, you can see the techniques used to process the wheat using stone mills.

In his time of splendor, large quantities of wheat, corn and barley are milled in Sabandía. The enormous machinery - that it ate their movements with the force of the water - grinds 800 kilos of grain in 8 hours.


The thermal baths of Yura are located 30 km from the city of Arequipa. Its waters come from the interior of the volcano Chachani 2 575 meters above sea level and its temperature fluctuates between 23 2° and 28 2° C. Also, close to the city, are medicinal sources of Jesus and Socosani.

Mansion of the Founder

The Sachaca farm or Mansion of the Founder is located 12 km from the city of Arequipa.

Built in ashlar to the edge of the Socabaya River, it is one of the large houses and mansions, most important and traditional in the region that once belonged to different owners of historic renown of Peru. The main entrance consists of a hallway ceiling vaulted, followed by a spacious main patio on which open windows and doors of the rooms. This beautiful architectural work is today open to the public.

Volcano Misti

Volcano Misti. Arequipa Peru The Volcano Misti is located to the South of Peru, located near the city of Arequipa. It is located at the foot of the Valley of the Chili at 2,400 meters above sea level and it has become one of the major symbols of the city.

The last time that the Misti showed some kind of activity was in 1870. During an expedition led by the archaeologists Jose Antonio Chavez and Johan Reinhard in 1998 six Inca skeletons of human sacrifices were found near the Summit.

With its perfect cone, thel Misti stands at 5.822 m. between the Chachani (6.075 m) and Pichu Picchu volcanoes (5.669 m). These impressive volcanoes are visible throughout the year, but especially during the dry season.

Caves of Sumbay - Rock Art

They are 97 km. to the North of the city of Arequipa by road to Caylloma at an approximate height of 4 127 meters above sea level.

Located within the boundaries of the national reserve of Salinas and Aguada Blanca, they are home to more than 500 figures in rock art. These representations, made possibly by the first settlers of the area, have 6000 to 8 000 years old, representing human and animal figures. It is located on the back of the Volacno Misti. It is a city that continues to live with Inca cultures such as the worship of gods such as the sun and the rituals.

Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve

It lies about 35 km. approximately northwest of the city of Arequipa. Its area is nearly 367 thousand hectares, covering territory of the provinces of Arequipa and Caylloma (Arequipa Region) and General Sánchez Cerro (Moquegua Region).

It was created in August of 1979 in order to preserve and protect important associations of flora and fauna, protecting natural environments that were in the process of destruction and deterioration, as well as protection of the vicuña through a resettlement program.

The reserve is located between 2 800 and 6 050 meters above sea level. And this includes the volcanoes Misti (5 825 m.), Chachani (6 075 m.) and Pichu Pichu (5 664 meters above sea level).

Flamencos. Arequipa PeruThe most representative species of the reserve include the vizcacha, the Fox, the Condor and the andean flamingo or parihuana.
It has determined the existence of 169 species of animals, 24 of which are mammals, 138 species of birds, 3 reptiles, 4 amphibians and 3 fish.
The Salinas Lagoon is considered a privileged place to observe the parihuanas at the time of migration.

National Sanctuary of Lagoons of Mejia

Lagoons of Mejía National Sanctuary was established on February 24, 1984. It is located in the Department of Arequipa, province of Islay, with 690, 60 hectares.

In the Lagoons of Mejía National Sanctuary, Arequipa, Peru, you can find 141 bird species, of which 84 are residents of the Peruvian coast and 57, migratory, or that are found in this area only at a certain time of the year, in an effort to escape from the harsh winter of other latitudes. Of the migratory, 17 reach Mejía in other parts of Peru, 4 other South American countries and 34 from North America.

On the shores of the lagoons lies the toad, while in the hills of the nearby beaches there are lizards, as Microlophus tigris and the higher areas low coastal fox. As the mullet and the silverside fish species have been recorded.
As for birds, there are approximately 180 species in the beach area , among migratory and resident. You can see: grey gull, playero blanco, rayador , peruvian gull, dominican gull and gull grey hood.

In the ponds are also other birds such as the tufted grebe, the great diver, the pato sutro, duck necklace, red duck, moorehen the common redfish strikes, the cuca heron, the great white heron, the small white heron and the blue heron. The parihuanas have preference for areas of low vegetation.

Colca Canyon

Colca Canyon. Arequipa PeruIt is 42 km. to the West from the town of Chivay. It is one of the deepest in the world, reach 3 400 metres at its peak in the town of Canco. It has at its right bank the mountain range of the Chili (Bomboya, Serpregrina, Mismi, Queshihua), and on the other hand accompanying are the Hualca Hualca, Sabancaya and Ampato. The Ubinas and the beautiful Coropuna can be seen from afar.

Condor of Arequipa. Arequipa PeruThe Colca Canyon is home to animals such as the Andean Condor 100 species of birds, four types of camelid: vicuña, guanaco, the llama and the alpaca. In addition there are over 300 species of plants, of which 30 are cacti, not to mention the original green yareta. One of the most invaluable of the visit to the Canyon is the dawn with the cliff where you can see, when dawn breaks, the flight of about 20 condors.

The Cotahuasi Canyon

Arequipa PeruReferred to as "The Canyon of the wonders", Cotahuasi is even deeper than the Colca Canyon and the Colorado, that reaches, according to the most accurate approximations, 3535 meters of depth. It comprises twelve life zones and three regions, and ecological, along the 100 kilometres of which forms the Valley, you can see different altitudinal, each of them holder of endemic species of flora and fauna. As well as beautiful landscapes seen from the top of the Canyon, Valley has tourist resources that go beyond observation: disciplines of adventure tourism as canoeing in the Cotahuasi River, trekking, mountaineering, paragliding and hang gliding can be made with a specialist Guide.

In the Cotahuasi Canyon, and throughout the Valley, a part of the appreciation of the landscape can be the following forms of tourism:

  • Fishing in the Cotahuasi River.
  • Kayak along the Cotahuasi River, being the most permissive area which is covered in the 500 meters of length of the barrel.
  • River rafting, trekking, mountain biking, free flight, climbing rock, bungee jumping, horse riding, etc; these disciplines are performed more frequently in the month of may, together with the celebration of the anniversary of the province, in the adventure sports festival.
The Valley also has the following attractions:
  • Falls of Sipia, waterfalls over 150 metres in height.
  • The stone forest of Santo Santo, whose extension is 5 square kilometers, finding to 4200 meters above sea level, 17 km away from the town of Cotahuasi.
  • The Puya Raimondi forest in the town of Lauripampa.
  • The forest of giant Cactus of Jewish Pampa in the village of Quechualla, people which is also famous for the vineyards and variety of fruit which is holder. The peculiarity of this giant cactus is coming to measure approximately 12 to 13 metres, in addition to live with a type of bat that establishes a symbiosis.
