In 1981, a Polish expedition after placed 33 days of Canyon, measured with little precision equipment and they felt it was 3250 feet deep.
The last expedition conducted to Colca Canyon in 2005, led by the mathematician and Polish Expeditionary Andrew Pietowski revealed that in the area adjacent to the town of Quillo ORCO, in the District of Huambo, the depth of the Colca Canyon was 4,160 m on the north side and 3,600 meters on the South side. Polish researcher explained that measurements vary over the years due to several factors, including the sinking of the riverbed and more precise technologies.
Colca Canyon formation was roughly in tectonic phases Andina and Quechua, i.e. in the last 150 million years, but its deepening process due to several factors such as the growth of the Cordillera de los Andes, during the deglaciation Quaternary period and mainly by the accelerated erosion processes caused by the Colca River. Finally, the formation of the primitive Colca Canyon must have been initiated approximately about 10 million years ago, but its current form is probably the last million years, i.e. to Quaternary.
The morphology of the vast Colca Canyon was influenced by the volcanic activities of the Sabancaya and Hualca Hualca, that occurred in the last million years, whose deposits formed a natural dam more than 5 km from base and 500 m high, trapping the Colca River by hundreds to thousands of years, thus the formation of a large lake, which would have extended from the village of Madrigal to Yanque. After thousands of years saw the abrupt breakdown of dam causing the current deepening of the Canyon is at this stage the Colca Canyon is a cliff of several meters deep and low-bandwidth, which locally narrow places Incasaltana and bridge Inca; downstream is deepened to abruptly transform in a Canyon of great proportions with slopes bordering the 60 2° inclination, it is common to find vertical cliffs of hundreds of meters with a perfect vertical disjunction (Oasis-clinging). Right bank has a strong and continuous slope from the snowy Bomboya top to the bottom of the barrel.
